Choose the right contractor
Choosing the right contractor is the most important decision you can make for
your
building experience. Make sure your contractor listens to you and discusses each and
every item with you thoroughly. Make sure your
contractor agrees to discuss your needs
on a weekly basis. This ensures that the
contractor and client stay focused
and
on track throughout the construction process.
Make sure your contractor has thought your
project
through from the beginning to the end.
Your
contractor should discuss your options
and
details with you, but not be insistent on using
their own ideas. Planning is a must. A well
planned project will Discuss your financial
needs with your
contractor, and they should help you make
the right decisions. A good
contractor
will plan your project and finances with you,
making sure every detail is
covered.
Make sure all codes and permits are in compliance. A
contractor that neglects
the rules and regulations does not have your best
interest in mind. Be sure your
contractor goes over all plans and permits with
you thoroughly. Remember a good
contractor will have a good working relationship
with the local building officials.
A good contractor will list all your project
specifications neatly and clearly.
Your contractor should
explain all details for you clearly and respectfully.
A contractor that avoids
specifications or is vague in description does not have your
best interest in
mind. All materials should be clearly listed including brands. Start and
completion dates should be clearly listed. The total cost of the project, terms
and
payments and all other financial details should be clearly listed. Make sure
your project
is warranted in writing. Remember if a contract is vague with
little detail the contract is
not in your best interest.
Don't be caught up or wowed with a bunch of association
placards. Most associations
can be joined for a small fee and this really does
not prove your contractors qualifications.
Make sure the associations your
contractor belongs to have something to do with the
building trade. Remember the BBB and the California state contractors board are a great
place to start.
